1. Who we are
Homefront is an independent podcast and research project run by its hosts, Giuliano Stochino-Weiss and Luke Irving. We are responsible for the personal data described here (in legal terms, the "data controller").
For anything about your data, email hello@homefrontpod.com.
2. The Signals newsletter
- What we collect
- Your email address, and the date you signed up.
- Why
- To send you Signals, our weekly email about the news covered on this site. Nothing else. We never sell, rent or share your address for marketing.
- Legal basis
- Your consent, which you give when you subscribe. You can withdraw it at any time.
- Who handles it
- MailerLite (UAB MailerLite, Lithuania), an EU-based company, stores the list and sends the emails for us.
- Email statistics
- Like most newsletter services, MailerLite tells us whether an email was opened and which links were clicked. We use this only to see what readers find useful.
- How long we keep it
- Until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only what MailerLite needs to make sure you are not emailed again.
- How to leave
- Every email has an unsubscribe link. Or email us and we will remove you.
To stop automated spam sign-ups, the form uses Google reCAPTCHA (the "I'm not a robot" box). Google receives technical information from your browser, such as your IP address, to make that check. See Google's privacy policy. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the list free of fake sign-ups.
3. Emailing us
If you email us, for example to suggest a story, a guest or a podcast, we use your name, address and message only to reply and to follow up on what you sent. We keep the conversation for as long as it is useful and delete it when it is not. We will never quote you on the show or the site without asking first.
4. Hosting, statistics and other services
Hosting. The site is hosted by Netlify (Netlify, Inc., United States). Like any web host, it processes your IP address to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks.
Visitor statistics. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies, does not build a profile of you and does not follow you to other sites. It tells us things like which pages are read, how many visits there were, and which country visitors are in. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in knowing whether the site is useful. We use no advertising trackers.
Other services. Some pages load content from other companies, which means your browser connects to them and shares technical information such as your IP address:
- Google Fonts, on every page, for the typeface.
- Esri and unpkg, on the Signals page, for the map and the map software.
- MailerLite and Google reCAPTCHA, on pages with the sign-up form.
- Riverside, our podcast host, on the Home and Listen pages. Nothing loads until you press Play; Riverside then counts the listen, as podcast hosts do for every app.
- Spotify, on The Lab page, for embedded episode players. These load only if you choose "Allow all" or press "Load the Spotify player".
Each of these companies handles that information under its own privacy policy.
5. Cookies and your choice
We do not set any cookies of our own. The first time you visit, we ask whether to allow embedded content that may set cookies, such as the Spotify player. Your answer is saved in your own browser (as "hf-consent" in local storage) so we don't ask again. You can change it at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page.
Google reCAPTCHA, on pages with the sign-up form, may set cookies it needs to tell people from bots.
6. Your rights
Under data protection law (the GDPR in the EU, and the UK GDPR) you can ask us to:
- tell you what data we hold about you and give you a copy
- correct it if it is wrong
- delete it
- stop or limit how we use it
Email hello@homefrontpod.com and we will reply within a month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the data protection authority where you live, for example the Belgian Data Protection Authority or the UK's Information Commissioner's Office.
7. Changes
If we change how we use your data, for example by adding a new service, we will update this page and the date at the top. If the change affects newsletter subscribers, we will tell you in Signals first.
